A Picture Can Paint a Thousand Words…

Like many, I was left disappointed after the Wonderlust event, I don’t know what I was expecting but Apple definitely didn’t deliver it.

To make things even worse, Apple’s flagship models are overheating and the backplates seem to break way too easily.

With that in mind, I definitely believe that Apple will have better success in the future, after all, Apple has only just released what I call the next generation iPhone, mainly because they have USB-C charging ports.

Whilst this year’s September event wasn’t what I expected it to be, it definitely got me thinking, it got me thinking about what I would like to see Apple do over the next couple of years.

I decided to share my thoughts in the form of a blog post, even though some of these points may sound silly.

New design for the iPhone

I wanted to start talking about the iPhone in its current form, the current design is getting a bit old now, especially the back of the phone. Don’t get me wrong we’ve seen some really nice new colours, but I think it’s time for the actual design to change.

I want Apple to come up with something new that will not only look great but also will also be distinct. Google did this really well with their latest two generations of the Google Pixel phones. Not only does their design look great, but it’s also something new that sets them apart really well.

I’m very happy to see Apple remove the notch from the baseline iPhone 15, it was definitely the right step forward. I remember being very surprised that last year’s premium models had the Dynamic Island whereas the basic iPhone 14’s did not.

With that in mind, there is very little that Apple can do on the front side of the phone now, I would like them to concentrate on the sides and rear of the phones with their next models.

Is it too much to ask for a foldable?

I know it’s asking a lot, but I would also like to see Apple release a foldable. It’s been around 4 years since Samsung released the Galaxy Z Fold and I find it very surprising that Apple haven’t yet taken that approach.

At the same time, I can fully understand why.

Apple have the iPad Mini, which is a brilliant little device, releasing a smartphone that can effectively turn into a mini iPad may not be in Apple’s best interest.

But at the same time, I think it would be awesome if they did. I mean picture this, you’re out and about and you suddenly find the need to take a few notes, you unfold your phone and make the notes on your phone using your Apple Pencil.

It will effectively give you a great little notepad, that you can take with you everywhere you go!

It would be even better if Apple released a dedicated pocket-sized Apple Pencil for it, but that’s definitely asking too much!

A Cheaper MacBook to compete with Chromebooks

A few years ago I worked at a tech store selling all sorts of tech products including laptops, tablets and even fridges. But when it came to laptops, I noticed something.

I noticed a buying pattern in the sense that most people purchased laptops for professional reasons, such as studying or for business. We didn’t get customers buying laptops for personal use often, they either purchased a very cheap laptop or a tablet instead.

In all fairness, smartphones have become powerful to such an extent that for the majority of people, a smartphone is perfectly suitable for everything that they need to do. So if they do buy a laptop it will be for very occasional use.

We also have to remember that some people may simply not be able to afford an expensive laptop leaving MacBooks out of the question.

The solution for these issues is for Apple to do something they haven’t done before and release a budget MacBook to compete with Chromebooks and basic Windows Laptops.

I honestly see the market for this. I mean Chromebooks have been incredibly popular with students. I even use a Chromebook myself from time to time. The potential of having a laptop that does everything on the web is massive!

There are so many benefits that come with this!

I can see a basic MacBook, similar to a Chromebook extremely beneficial in many cases, even for Apple as it will help others discover Apple.

I think it will become especially popular with students and educational institutes who all of a sudden will be able to afford Apple products, and when they see the quality they provide, it may lead to more sales in Apple’s core products.

I know, when I first moved from Android to Apple, it was the iPhone SE we used at work that made me switch to the iPhone 6, then I got an iPad, a MacBook and a whole bunch of other Apple products, all because I had seen how well the system works.

That is why I seriously believe that if Apple pulls a stunt like this, it will give others the opportunity to discover Apple in the same way I did.

Now, In an ideal world, I would like to see this new MacBook priced at around £200, but I know that won’t happen, it is Apple we’re talking about. A more reasonable price would be anywhere between £300 and £400.

If this was to become a thing, Apple needs to be careful here, especially when it comes to quality, I mean I’m not expecting MacBook Pro quality here, but it should still be of reasonable quality to give new customers a good first impression of the brand.

Touchscreen MacBooks?

Staying on with the MacBooks, I would also like to see Apple introduce touchscreen MacBooks, I mean so many brands already do this!

I seriously believe that it can improve the user experience, especially when it comes to things like working on large Spreadsheets, Video editing, photo editing and much more.

I’m not really expecting any miracles with the screen, that’s what the iPad is for, I think it would just be nice to have a basic touch screen for small things such as selecting things and moving things to where you need them to be with your finger.

I completely understand why Apple hasn’t introduced this, I mean it has the potential to ruin iPad sales, but I don’t think it will if executed properly.

What about touchscreen iMacs?

Desktop All-in-one computers have been around for a long time and many of these feature a touchscreen. I remember the first time I used one of these machines and I was very surprised at how useful the touchscreen functionality was, it definitely felt more interactive!

This was a Windows 7 All-in-one computer we’re talking about, it was a long time ago! I’m not really an iMac guy, I think I would find it difficult to work on just one screen or the iMac and a secondary monitor that doesn’t look anything like the iMac, I would much prefer a Mac Mini.

But saying that, if Apple made the iMac touchscreen I would definitely consider investing in one, it will be great for editing my videos!

Final Thoughts

Technology has gone a long way over the last 10 years, and I find it very interesting that Apple has decided not to adapt to many things that other manufacturers are doing. Put it this way, I seriously found it surprising that my iPad Pro had a USB-C port but my iPhone did not.

Apple has released some really nice tech this year, but I feel that this has been a bit of a waypoint before they release some really interesting and innovative tech.

I definitely don’t think that Apple is as innovative as some brands are at the moment but, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t innovative, I mean the Apple Vision Pro and even the Dynamic Island are perfect examples of innovation!

But then brands like Samsung come in, who by the way have a much larger ecosystem that contains your standard tech like your phones and laptops, but it also contains things like smart home devices, fridges, washing machines and even TVs! Not forgetting to mention the fact that they have foldable phones!

I get that Apple is targeting a different customer with their current range of products, but I think it would be nice if they at least became a little bit more innovative with their current line of products.

At the same time, I do believe that they have their reasons for not implementing some of the points I mentioned in this post.

And now it’s your turn, what would you like to see Apple do over the next couple of years? Let us know in the comments!
